What Travel Insurance Plans Can Cover

With many travel insurance plans for your choosing, there remain a number of common items and situations considered as fundamental to any travel insurance coverage. In the following checklist, get an idea of what a typical insurance plan includes.

• BAGGAGE MISPLACEMENT, LOSS OR DAMAGE. Nobody is perfect, not even your first-class carrier. There are indeed unavoidable and unexplainable circumstances, with which your luggage can become damaged, misplaced or even lost in transit. Typically, you will receive financial reimbursement which may closely match the declared value of your luggage and its contents. True, you may not get actual items replaced but at least you will not be leaving the airport's departure area empty-handed.

• CARRIER BANKRUPTCY. Nothing can be more heart-breaking than planning your vacation for months, only to find out the last minute that you cannot fly and you cannot get your money back because your carrier has gone bankrupt. If you are flying on cheap but not well-known carriers, you may want to make sure your travel insurance covers cases of bankruptcy. Depending on the plan you are getting, you may get a reimbursement for your flight ticket or you may receive assistance to secure another flight from another carrier that is headed to the same destination.

• EMERGENCIES AND ACCIDENTS. If you are a stark believer of Murphy's law, you will agree to the saying: “If something can go wrong, it will.” Most travel insurance companies are well aware of this saying too, and can assure you that you have a shoulder to lean on and a venue to get the assistance you need in times of emergencies.

Emergencies may involve small accidents that require immediate medical attention. They may also involve procedural difficulties such as getting your flight schedule changed or postponed at the last minute, helping you file reports for theft and burglary, and shouldering costs for abrupt add-ons to existing charges and fees. Some companies can be very accommodating, but others consider this type of coverage an additional service which can entail additional costs from your end.

• MEDICAL CARE. Compared to a regular health insurance, your travel insurance can offer you medical assistance and care, not just during your flight, but on the entire duration of your trip. Medical care includes check-ups, consultations, emergency care as well as hospitalization. For pre-existing medical conditions, take note that you are only covered once you declare these and once your insurance company agrees to co-pay or shoulder costs. Check with your travel insurance agent for the coverage period (usually a week or two) and for the specific monetary limits or caps in place.

• TRIP DELAYS AND CANCELLATIONS. While most airline companies will offer you free accommodations and temporary care during flight delays, your travel insurance plan will keep you further protected by offering you reimbursements as well, if not assistance to help you secure another flight on another carrier. Be sure to get the complete details from your travel insurance agent, as different terms are offered by different insurance providers.
